UNDERSTANDING RESTRAINING ORDERS

IN NEW JERSEY

Under the New Jersey Prevention of Domestic Violence Act (N.J.S.A. 2C:25-17), courts can issue:

Temporary Restraining Orders (TROs): emergency protection orders granted quickly, often without a hearing.

Final Restraining Orders (FROs): permanent orders usually issued after a full hearing.

These hearings are critical. A TRO can become permanent if not

successfully challenged, and can lead to serious consequences

like firearm forfeiture, police record entries, and restrictions on

where you can live or work. â€‹
